Combat Veteran – Fighting for Veterans

SERVICE to our Community, State, and Nation for me started in the year 2000 when I enlisted into the Iowa Army National Guard as an Infantryman. I was just 17 years old and a junior at Lewis Central High School. While much of my public service is highlighted by my time in local government, I still actually continue to wear the uniform, only now as a field grade Infantry officer.

With two combat deployments to remote areas of Afghanistan, (’04 & ’10) I know all to well the sacrifices that our men and women in uniform have to make to serve our great nation.

Which is why as a Combat Veteran and County Supervisor I am dedicated to ensuring quality in our services to Veterans. Here’s a list of some other great things happening at our County VA:

  • $2500 Veterans Housing Relocation Grant
  • VA Remote Tele-Health Service
  • Veterans Workforce Development
  • Tiny Homes for Homeless Veterans
  • Veterans Food Pantry.

Consistent Record of Lowering Tax Levies

In 2014 Pottawattamie County experienced the largest tax levy increase in history.

In 2015 I took office as your County Supervisor and have voted to reduce that levy for seven years straight! A trend that I intend to continue!

I have said it before and I will say it again, Pottawattamie County is in the best financial position ever. It takes creativity, forward thinking and most importantly, Leadership – traits that I bring to the table.

Calculating with Creativity

This pretty much sums up how I feel when I get my tax statement and try to sort out the property tax levies!

The truth is taxation is incredibly complicated. Let me try and simplify it a little. Here are the handful of tax levies and current rates that the Board of Supervisors are responsible for maintaining (based on valuations set by County Assessor)

– General Basic – $3.71
– General Supplemental – $3.28
– Rural Basic – $3.36
– Debt Service – $0.49

What’s a penny worth?
– General Basic – $57,790.78
– Gen. Sup. – $57,790.78
– Rural Basic – $19,646.98
– Debt Service – $59,324.01

Since taking office in 2015, I have been a part of seven budget cycles and have voted to reduce these levies literally each year – all while balancing the budget, leveraging numerous unforeseen costs, (i.e. floods, pandemic, derechos) AND making investments to promote broadening of our tax base!

I often tell people that “budgeting is an art” – you have to prioritize, be creative, and be prepared for the unexpected. Right now the County Board is evaluating costs, revenues, debt, and growth (~5%). It is a careful calculation, but rest assured knowing that the downward trend in the levies will continue! Pottawattamie County is in great hands and I would argue that our financial position is one of the best in our county’s history!

I take great pride in what I do as a County Supervisor and I will continue to fight for YOU to lower taxes, ensure quality of services, and strengthen of our financial standing. It takes leadership and forward thinking – these are traits that I believe I bring to the table and why I am humbly asking for your Vote on June 7th, 2022, so that I can continue working hard for you in county government.

It is with a true sense of thanks that I am making this announcement, especially because of all the support you have given me to chase my dreams in local politics.
